Massive wooden beams, collapsed and burned during the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BCE, have been unearthed at excavations in the City of David. The find is among the most direct physical evidence yet recovered from the moment the First Temple fell, and it is already shifting how archaeologists can anchor that catastrophe in time.

Melted plaster from the walls then poured over the charred wood, sealing it from the elements and creating conditions that allowed the timbers to survive for roughly 2,600 years. That sequence of collapse and encasement, destructive in origin, turned out to be remarkably preserving.
Growth Rings Compress Centuries of Uncertainty Into a Decade
Dr. Johanna Regev of the Israel Antiquities Authority is leading the scientific study of the beams. Their scientific value rests on two qualities that rarely appear together in Israeli excavations. The beams are unusually thick, and they contain a large number of growth rings.
“It is very rare in Israel to find wood with such a large number of growth rings,” Regev said.
Those rings are the key to a significant methodological advance. Tree-ring sequences function as a chronological record embedded in the wood itself, and when enough rings are present, they allow researchers to match the sample against established chronologies with high precision. The implications for dating are substantial.
“Until now, we could date finds within a range of hundreds of years,” Regev said. “Now we can attain much greater precision, narrowing the dating range down to as little as 10 years.”
That shift from centuries to a single decade represents a step change in what archaeologists can claim about the final period of the First Temple.
Ruins Left as Testimony: The Concept of a Landscape of Memory
The physical survival of the beams tells one story. The way the destruction layer was treated by those who rebuilt Jerusalem afterward tells another. Excavation directors believe the ruins were not cleared when the city was reconstructed following the Babylonian destruction. “The concept of a landscape of memory is familiar from many cultures around the world,” he said. “Preserving memory is a human need, seeking to preserve what once existed. Here, we see it in its clearest form: a deliberate choice to leave ruins in place as a testament to the destruction and build the new layer over them.”
That interpretation, if sustained, gives the find a second layer of historical significance. The beams would represent not only the physical residue of destruction but also an ancient act of communal commemoration, a choice made by people rebuilding their city to keep the evidence of what they had lost.
Tisha B’Av and the Weight of the Announcement’s Timing
The discovery was announced just before Tisha B’Av, the Jewish day of mourning that commemorates the destruction of both the First and Second Temples. For those working the excavation, the proximity was difficult to separate from the find itself.
“We are just before Tisha B’Av,” said excavation director Efrat Bocher. “This discovery makes you feel that you are witnessing the very moment of destruction, the moment when it all happened. It’s deeply moving.”
Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu responded to the find in explicitly historical and national terms. “The soil of Jerusalem continues to bear witness to what some seek to deny,” he said. “The wooden beams burned in the destruction of the First Temple are a silent yet powerful testimony to the presence of the Jewish people in Jerusalem some 2,600 years ago.” He framed the uncovering as an obligation, describing it as a responsibility to preserve and pass that history to future generations.
