Who Are The Best Teams In Premier League History?

When we talk about football, or soccer for our American readers, most people think of the Premier League as the biggest and best league in the world and for good reason. The best players play in the English League and this attracts the most viewers of any league in the world.

With this much attention and money being poured into the league, some of the best teams to ever play football have played and dominated the league. Even though the league has been dominated by different teams over the years, some have stood the test of time and been labelled as the best of all time.

Manchester City – 2022/23

Manchester City are a team that could have their own list of the best Premier League teams of all time because they are so good. Every year you could look at the Premier League betting odds and see Manchester City at the lowest odds of winning the league and for good reason.

Manchester City in 2023 completed a treble and this coincided with them winning their third Premier League title in a row. This is a combined feat that will be really hard for any team to match and instantly adds them to a list of the best teams in football history. With a fun style to watch and a way of dominating games, they made winning the treble look easy and lit up the world in the process.

Chelsea – 2004/05

Jose Mourinho’s first season at Chelsea is a season I feel goes under the radar when people talk of the best teams in Premier League history and I am not sure why. This team broke a record that no one will ever beat, with the lowest amount of goals conceded at JUST 15.

They ended the season with 95 points and 25 clean sheets which still stands to this day. They were one draw away from going unbeaten and ended the season with just one loss coming against the aforementioned Man City. This team deserves to be brought up when we speak about football history.

Manchester United – 2007/08

This is a tricky one to pick because Manchester United have the most Premier League titles in history with 13, which is a ridiculous number. So picking their best team is hard, the obvious choice would’ve been to pick their treble-winning side from 1999 but I think Man City’s treble-winning side is better.

So picking their side in the middle of their three-peat (three League titles in a row) made more sense. This season also coincided with them winning the Champions League by beating Chelsea on penalties. This list may seem like the best way to be considered one of the best sides is to win a double but I don’t agree even though I do think it matters.

Winning the Premier League is a fantastic achievement so doing that while also focusing on other trophies is widely impressive and should be remembered as such.

Honourable Mention: Arsenal – 2003/04

Considering the league and its level of achievement, it is hard to leave out some clubs. One team that has been unlucky to miss out is the invincible Arsenal side from 2003/04. This a record that no one has ever beaten and no one will and this needs to be recognised.

However, Arsenal drew a lot of games that year and did very poorly in other competitions, which hindered their success in a lot of people’s eyes, including my own.

Who Is The Best?

As I mentioned, I don’t think Arsenal are in the debate for the best but are definitely in the debate for the top three sides in Prem history. Now when it comes to picking the best it is a major toss-up between Manchester City and Chelsea and I think I will have to give it to Manchester City because of the manner that they did it in, in a time when football is at its toughest.
