The Romans create the province of Pannonia in western Hungary

Early 2nd Century

The Romans conquer eastern Hungary. They call it Dacia.

The Romans withdraw from western Hungary

The Magyars enter Hungary

The Magyars are crushed by the Germans at the battle of Augsburg

King Stephen rules Hungary

King Andreas II issues the Golden Bull

The Mongols invade Hungary

King Matthias rules Hungary

Hungarian peasants rebel

The Turks crush the Hungarians at the battle of Mohacs

The Austrians take Hungary from the Turks

Modern Hungary

Revolution breaks out in Hungary

Hungary is declared independent. However the Russians put down the rebellion.

The Dual Monarchy is formed

Compulsory education is introduced in Hungary

Following defeat in the First World War Hungary becomes independent

1920

Admiral Horthy becomes head of state

1940

Hungary joins the Tripartite Pact

1941

Hungary joins the German invasion of Russia

1944

The Germans occupy Hungary

1945

The Russians occupy Hungary

1945-48

The Communists gradually take over Hungary

1956

Hungary rebels against Communism. The Russians put down the rebellion.

1989

Communism collapses in Hungary

1990

Elections are held in Hungary

1999

Hungary joins NATO

2004

Hungary joins the EU

2020 In 2022 Katalin Novak becomes the first woman president of Hungary
